sunstone Guerrero

The dances and rhythms of Guerrero have a strong African influence. As many slaves escaped Spanish rule during colonial times, they found refuge along the coasts of Guerrero. The people of Guerrero, "los Calentanos" (a term connoting "warmth")--are taught from childhood to dance the local rhythms, which include "chilenas," "boleros," "sones," "zambas," "jarabes," and "gustos."Guerrero Dance The dances are usually danced on a wooden platform while their lyrics are generally about daily work life, beautiful women, and nature or animals characteristic of Guerrero. "El Zopilote" (the vulture), "La Iguana", and "El Toro Rabón" (the bull) highlight the animal songs. The women's number, "Arrancazacate" derives its name from the "zapateos" (stomping) being so close to the ground. It is traditionally danced as an introduction to the "zamba" El Toro Rabón.
