Danza (Dance) was a way of life for the Aztecs, for they danced to revere the sun and the earth. The term "Concheros" is used to draw a distinction between the "danza" before and after the European influence set in. The Europeans introduced the string instruments to the indigenous sounds of the "danza," as well as the "concha" (worn around the ankles)--thus the term "Concheros." The attire includes the colors of nature: orange and red symbolize fire; green and blue symbolize the sea; and brown symbolizes the earth. The men wear a "maxtla" (over the hips), a "pechera" (over the chest), and the "penacho" (large headpiece). Aztec society encouraged elaborate decoration for the men, because they were the center of society, whereas the women's attire was more conservative.
