The Hausteca region is surrounded by Tamaulipas, Veracruz, San Luis Potosí, Puebla and Querétaro. During colonial times, the Spanish, French, Dutch and Caribbean people arrived in the Huasteca region, mixing with the native people to create a unique folklore.

The term "huasteca" derives from "huaxtla." The term "huapango" is of Nahuatl origin and means "dance over wooden platform." The musical accompaniment is the "jarana," the violin and an 8-string guitar ("huapanguera"), with vocalists displaying the falsetto, a regional characteristic of the huapango.

The "Huapango" (the dance of this region) is interpreted in a rather haughty style, said to be inherited from the French who were one of the first groups to establish themselves in the region. The movements and zapateos (stomping) are inspired by animals, such as the horse, the caiman, the huasanga and others.

As with many of the Mexican regions, the dances are energetic and show flirtation between man and woman.
